Job Description: Elementary Special Education Teacher

Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Position Type: Full-Time | 10-Month School Year

Position Summary

We are seeking a passionate and student-centered Elementary Special Education Teacher to provide high-quality instruction and individualized support for students with disabilities in grades K–5. The ideal candidate is committed to fostering an inclusive learning environment, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring every student has the opportunity to achieve academic, social, and behavioral success.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with IDEA and Tennessee state regulations.
  • Deliver specially designed instruction aligned with Tennessee academic standards.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the unique learning needs of students with a variety of disabilities.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to provide accommodations, modifications, and co-teaching support.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments, collect student performance data, and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Maintain accurate special education documentation, progress reports, and compliance records.
  • Participate in eligibility meetings, annual IEP reviews, reevaluations, and parent conferences.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, families, therapists, and school staff.
  • Utilize evidence-based instructional and behavior management strategies.
  • Create a safe, structured, and engaging classroom environment that promotes independence and confidence.
  • Support students in developing academic, communication, social-emotional, and functional life skills.
  • Participate in professional learning opportunities and school-wide initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Valid Tennessee Special Education teaching license with the appropriate endorsement or eligibility for Tennessee licensure.
  • Knowledge of IDEA, IEP development, and special education compliance requirements.
  • Experience working with elementary-aged students with diverse learning needs preferred.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze student data and implement targeted interventions.
  • Proficiency with educational technology and electronic IEP systems preferred.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in inclusive classrooms, resource settings, or self-contained programs.
  • Knowledge of behavior intervention strategies, positive behavior supports (PBIS), and assistive technology.
  • Experience collaborating with speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, and other support personnel.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and actively supervise students throughout the school day.
  • Ability to perform physical interventions when required and permitted under district policies and training.
